Everyone knows that good publicity is the best advertising. A well placed article,
a positive radio show, or the right interview on TV are all what Library Directors dream about.
While many people use the terms 'public relations' and 'media relations' interchangeably, the definition of media relations is more narrow. Media relations refers to the relationship with journalists, while public relations extends that relationship beyond the media to the general public.
IFLS media relations services basically coordinate day-to-day System-wide media relations activities. This includes developing pitches and proactive media strategies; scheduling media interviews with libraries; responding to media requests; writing press releases and press kit materials; and cultivating and maintaining relationships with System media outlets.
Regularly, press releases announcing national and regional initiatives are sent to our area media outlets. Upcoming press releases are announced in NewsFlashes 2-4 weeks before they are distributed. Library Directors are encouraged to send Laurie library-specific events and highlights so each press release can be tailored to its community.
