The Spring Valley Public Library is seeking a well-organized, community-focused, and energetic leader to serve as our full-time Library Director. Located in a vibrant rural village, our library serves over 1,400 residents across Pierce and St. Croix Counties and is a proud member of the IFLS Library System and the MORE consortium.

Position Overview

The Library Director reports to a five-member Board of Trustees and is responsible for the overall administration and management of the library. This includes developing the collection, managing finances, supervising staff, and strengthening community partnerships. The ideal candidate will understand the unique needs and opportunities of rural library service and be dedicated to delivering accessible, responsive, and innovative programs to our patrons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the library, ensuring high-quality service in a rural
    setting.
  • Manage the library’s budget, finances, and grant opportunities in collaboration with the
    Board.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support library staff and volunteers.
  • Lead collection development to reflect community interests and needs.
  • Design and promote engaging programs that connect with rural audiences across all age
    groups.
  • Foster strong relationships with local organizations, schools, and municipal partners.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.
  • Represent the library in local, regional, and system-level meetings and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 54 semester credits, with at least half in the liberal arts and sciences,
    qualifying for temporary Wisconsin Grade III certification.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher is preferred.
  • Experience managing or working in a rural or small-community library setting is highly
    desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Comfort with library technology, digital services, and the ability to adapt to evolving tools.
  • A commitment to community engagement, equity in access, and public service
    excellence.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting wage: $20.00 per hour or higher, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits package included.
